For those of you who are not so caught up with current trends, chopped and screwed is a sub-genre which emerged in Houston, Texas by DJ Screw. the history behind it states that DJ Screw used to spend his time on the mixing boards with a vinyl in one hand and a double cup of fluorescent, purple liquid in the other. He put two of the same track on two separate turntables and slowed them down to about half their BPM and began moving from one track to the other with the crossfader, creating a skipping effect which is commonly known as ‘Chopped And Screwed’ today.
TheRembrandt, Slim k, DJ candlestick and others are a few who still continue the style, expanding the sub-genre past just hip-hop and urban, texan music to more modern sounds. TheRembrandt incorporates majestic casual, r’n’b, soul, and various other popular genres which were not initially designed for chopped and screwed projects but he still implements them seamlessly.
The first chopped and screwed project i worked on was called ‘8trak’. This was a r’n’b mixtape which contained 8 Chopped & screwed tracks ranging from ‘Aaliyah – one in a million’ to ‘Bryson Tiller – Don’t’. This tape was very well received on Soundcloud with my version of Dej loaf – Me, you and Hennessy reaching over 100,000 plays and just over 700 likes and reposts. It was a real milestone. The artwork was done by my creative associate ‘Thedits’ who created an amazing piece of art depicting two 8 track cassettes dripping purple liquid, tributing the late DJ Screw.
8Bit was the second installment into a soon-to-be trilogy of C&S tapes by ‘TheRembrandt’ and ‘Thedits’. this piece was more focussed on creating a theme of classic games and modern r’n’b which was done by adding sound effects from old 90’s and 80’s games such as street fighter and pac-man. The ambience and reeverb really created a warmth and tenderness to the sound and this one is definitely one that need to be put on repeat. TheRembrandt says that the next and final installment will be called ‘8clip’ and will be based more around ‘trap music’ than previous installments. He did say that Chief Keef – laurel canyon would be on it so take a listen to that and you can decipher the sound for yourself.
