Coming across La rouge’s illustrations for the first time will definitely be a very interesting and enchanting experience for most. Her work is very daring, bold and we at Utopia naturally wanted to dig deeper and pick the artists brain a little. La Rouge’s work resembles classic ‘shibari’, an ancient Japanese artistic form of rope bondage. Most notably seen in the work of the Japanese photographer and contemporary artist Nobuyoshi Araki. Shibari is a very sensual and often even sexual act, and La Rouge’s work if anything is sexually explicit. Her use of ball-gags and nipple clamps in her work show a sprinkling of the sadomasochistic relationship between the characters and the artist. Lets delve a bit deeper and get to know La rouge!
Where and how did your journey into the arts begin?
This beautiful experience began in 2012 and by 2015 I had developed a more defined style and I started to give life to ‘La rouge’ as the character behind my illustrations. This began as an interest that a person sowed into me.
I decided to explore various art forms: drawing, painting, sculpting etc. Until I became completely fascinated with the subject.
How is your personality reflected in your work?
I think the most outstanding thing about my work is the fact that i’m not afraid of risk, and that is a part of my personality. I’m not afraid to do something that annoys other people, if it’s something I do not see as wrong.
How have your peers in Colombia reacted to your work?
At first I think they took it as something GREAT! Since there are not many people who dare to make erotic art for fear of being judged in our society as vulgar. The social networks that I use to spread my work, including Instagram where all are critical. I’ve obviously received all kinds of comments from good to insulting. Colombia is still very censored in terms of sexual expression, therefore it is not easy. But I think that the support I receive from many people is one of the main things that give that push to ensure that I will never stop creating.
The sexual element of your artwork is very distinguished, who or what inspired you to draw like this?
I am inspired by wild and chameleon women who are not afraid to be what they want; whether that be in bed or in their lives. Their sensuality and eroticism inspire me. Many girls I draw are real women, women who I think are brutal and I want to see embodied in La Rouge. And with content that is more explicit, definitely my source of inspiration is porn, where one can see anything. I do not want to pigeonhole sex because it is really broad and we all have different preferences and fetishes, that is one of the reasons why I make erotic art.
What is a dream project you have always wanted to work on?
I’ve always wanted to make sculptures, that’s where I want take my art. That is my future project and something i’m working towards.
What are your views on Japanese erotic photographer ‘Nobuyoshi Araki’?
Can I say that I love him? Well I love him! I feel a lot of affinity with his work, I love gore, the dark, I’ve always been fascinated by that perverse side that we each have. I mean what else can I say? His work is beautiful and original.
For someone seeing one of your illustrations for the first time, what would you want them to take away from your work?
I want them to come back for more haha. I hope that my content catches them off guard, they identify with the characters, and maybe then they can see the goddess that I see in them.
Did you study art?
No, I am empirical in illustration, I studied textile design and fashion production. I would say that I am self taught, but I am very curious about the process of art school.
For you, is your representation of the female form in your art, empowering for women?
Everything has always been censored for women and we even censor ourselves for the approval of others. I do not know what planet they think we live on, but it is not real or fair. I don’t want to make women look like sexual objects because what I see in them is beauty and that’s why I represent them as goddesses. I do not think we need to be censored, I ask for more empowerment for women, it’s time to get out of our shells!
What can we expect from La Rouge in 2017?
I hope to fill you up with a lot of erotic art in 2017 haha.
With my illustrations I try to remove any prejudices that still exist about sexual identity and present sex as a natural thing. So my quest on this artistic path is just beginning, and I hope this year will be filled with opportunities to showcase my work in many ways.
The dictionary defines Utopia as an imaginary place or state in which everything is perfect. What is your own personal utopia?
My personal utopia is CHAOS, and I hope there is still a lot of that in my life, so I never get bored. And continue to explore my personal and artistic side.
